How do they figure out where to post deer crossing signs?
———- from Rick Brown of Kalona, IA
Time was, a conservation officer would just guess and put the signs where hefelt deer might leap from the woods into traffic. Now, due to OSHAregulations and new Federal mandates, special deer consultants have to beemployed. These panels of five to ten deer, representing a mixture ofdoes, bucks, and fawns, file an initial report, which is then reviewed by anadvisory panel of automobile drivers who have hit deer in the past. Thispanel then kicks the proposal upstairs to the Wildlife ManagementConsortium, a special interest group of food service companies who ownconcessions in our national parks. So, like most matters of public policy,it’s more complicated than you ever imagined.
