What does it mean when an appliance is labeled “maintenance free”?
———- from Ben McArtle of Cedar Rapids IA
It means, of course, it can’t be fixed. That’s good news for appliance companies and bad news for the rest of us. Seems nobody was buying those maintenance agreements, the ones they try to push on you after you’ve agreed to make a major purchase. So the manufacturers got mad and sealed each appliance permanently. Sometimes, you’ll see a little warning sigh, with the caution “No user serviceable parts inside.” What they really mean is that there are little explosive devices attached to every removeable part and any attempt to toy with the inner workings will prove fatal. All the people who used to service appliances are now working on the assembly line, attaching these explosive devices. That’s progress!
