I’ve heard that people who play musical instruments enjoy a greater degree of peace of mind than those who don’t. I have always been troubled by a nervous, disposition, and would like to anchor my restless mind by studying an instrument. Which instrument should I begin with?
———- from Jane Cox, Davenport, IA
The tuba is large, unglamorous, and ultimately does quite a job of centering those who play it. It’s hard to be emotionally all over the map with a tuba wrapped around you. The noises it makes are quite soothing, in a primal sort of way. I’ve never known an hysterical tubist. The piano, on the other hand, encourages grandiosity and hypersensitivity. Most pianists fancy themselves poets and deep thinkers, two psychic traps that lead straight to mental anguish. The clarinet is the instrument of choice for those gifted with humility. If you’re willing to look squarely at your personal assets and liabilities, then pick up that licorice stick and blow.
This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read. Your description of musicians is based on what research? How many musicians so you actually know? I know thousands. I’ve been a professional musicians for 15 years in a major orchestra, and there is no cookie-cutter personality traits as you describe for each instrumentalist. Also, a tuba doesn’t wrap around your body – that’s a Sousaphone. And, trust me, I know numerous clarinet players who are egomaniacs and pianists who are not grandiose or hypersensitive. Where did you come up with this stuff?
