Why are men, on the average, taller than women? My girlfriend is taller than me, but our friends and family refer to us as an “average couple.”

Your friends are just being nice. They probably think of you as hideous pathetic mutants. Nature abhors nothing more than a tall woman and a squat man. Genetic science cries out against it, for their offspring would be tragic misfits, unwanted by either the ecto- or mesomorphs of this world. So, when you want the straight dope, you can’t turn to your family or friends. They’re too invested in the status quo. If you want your feelings hurt, turn to science. That’s what we’re here for.
