When I was a child, I always thought being a grownup would involve making decisions and using the kinds of knowledge possessed by adults. Now I am a man, and I’m employed in the mailroom of a large corporation. My job involves repetitive tasks that any fifth grader could manage, although I have a college degree. What happened?

You’ve been had by the system. How else would we train a subservient workforce, teach them to dress neatly, to keep their hands folded on their desk, to keep their papers neat, and to hand them in on time? They had to put a carrot at the end of that stick, and the carrot seemed sophisticated, worldly, flavored with opportunity. Most fifth graders would have dropped out of school if they only knew what adulthood had in store for them. Talk about childcare problems!
