Those “telescopes” are actually “girly picture tubes.” The word “Survey”, incidentally, is a corruption of “Her Way” — a reference to pre-historic matriarchial societies where women used to stand on the roads, staring down “Big Hunk Tubes” at pictures of scantily clad men.
